Don’t Slouch do you hear? (Body Pain)
Posture is very important to keep your body parts such as back, neck and shoulders in sound health and will save you from pain. The best way to avoid pain is to choose the right furniture to make sure that posture doesn’t trouble you.
Choosing the right furniture:
1. Chairs, couches and mattresses that are ergonomically designed.
2. For those who sit for long hours, an ideal chair is one that allows for different seating positions
or dynamic sitting.
Dynamic sitting allows for 5 to 6 different sitting positions. Any chair on which you spend long
hours should be flexible and should follow the motion of what you do while sitting. For example, if
you sit back, it should push back a little and come back with you when you straighten up. In this
way, different body muscles work and create a balance between them.
3. There should be enough room while sitting so that you can move your legs, ankles and feet around
for proper blood circulation.
4. A good lumbar support is vital for the curved spine.
5. For the arms there should be an armrest for relaxing your shoulder muscles otherwise it can lead to
stress in the arms and shoulders.
6. Keep a constant check on your posture. A 90-degree sitting position is not good for your stomach
and internal organ. The angle should be a bit more obtuse. If you sit in an immovable chair for
more than two hours it can affect health. Don’t flex your knees under the chair because your blood
circulation gets affected. Try to keep your legs extended. Feel relaxed while sitting. A simple
seater with the right dimensions and comfort is the best.
The right chairs:
1. Should have the option of adjusting the height, should provide lumber support, have arm rest and
should be high enough so that feet can rest on the floor and don’t dangle.
2. The height of the chair and your sitting position should be such that your eyes look at the middle
of the screen of the computer.
3. It is good to have a swivel.
4. The seat should have a firm padding which should be made of a breathable material.
5. Stretch every few minutes, get up and go for a brief stroll and drink plenty of water.
6. The width of the chair should be 50 cm, the depth 50 cm and the height from the floor 50 cm.
7. Your forearms should be able to comfortably rest on the table, which should be neither too be high
nor to low. You should not bend your back while eating nor stretch out to help yourself.
8. On a couch, it is better to lift your legs up and make yourself comfortable.
9. A dynamic chair with a footrest is the best.
10. Don’t sit on a hard surface chair or anything without back support like a stool for too long.
11. Anything too soft or too hard is not good like a ‘sink-in-sofa’ or soft pillows or a hard-as-wood
mattress. Whatever you sit on or lie down on should cushion your back and should take the shape of
your back.
12. Don’t buy a chair if you don’t feel comfortable in it in the first few seconds.
13. The sitting arrangement in the living room should be such that when the person sits on a chair or
a sofa, he is able to lean all the way back and can still have his feet touching the ground. The
back should be supported well and you do not slouch.
14. Bean bags are not good for the back as they do not provide a firm support.
